Karoline Grunenwald

d. July 11, 2015

Mrs. Karoline “Karola” Grunenwald, 79, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2015, at Benefis Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 10 am at O’Connor Memorial Chapel. O’Connor Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Born in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany, Karoline met and married the love of her life, Paul Herman Grunenwald. As the wife of an Air Force veteran, she was very proud at having learned to speak English, and in 1966, following months of studying, she became an American citizen. In 1995 she retired as the manager of military clothing sales for Malmstrom’s Army and Air Force Exchange Service. She loved to sew; however, cooking and baking were her passion. Over the years Karoline worked at Diamond Jacks, Town House, Baker Bobs, and the Bar S. She was well known for her German dinners and desserts. Karoline made it her mission to feed everyone, and whether you were hungry or not, you couldn’t say no to her! Karoline had a strong faith in God and attended St. John’s Lutheran Church. Karoline is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Paul Grunenwald; daughter Helga Grunenwald; son Paul (Sue) Grunenwald, Jr.; grandchildren Matthew Grunenwald, Amber Thompson, Lindsey (John) Carey, and Aaron Grunenwald, and great-grandchildren Chandler Carey and Audrey Grunenwald. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she enjoyed spoiling them. Karoline’s loving family in Germany include her sister, Betty Schluttenhofer and nephew Klaus (Melita) Schluttenhofer, sister Marianne (Helmut) Hirsch, brother Adolf (Annelie) Kornbauer, sister-in-law Marianne Kornbauer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Karoline was preceded in death by her father, Josef Kornbauer; mother Karolina Wanke, brother Josef Kornbauer; sister Christa Haunstein; and brother-in-law Hans Schluttenhofer. Karoline was a supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital and in lieu of flowers donations can be name in Karoline’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
