Connie Louise Marcum

Connie Louise (Voorhies) Marcum, 69, passed away in her home of heart failure on June 21, 2019. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Shelby on July 27, 2019 at 10 a.m. Connie grew up in Shelby where she graduated from high school and began a family. She dedicated her life to being an active member of the community and being of service and caring for others. Early in her life she worked at several restaurants in and around Shelby including The Husky Cafe, Bears Truck Stop, and the Homestead Café east of town.After that she went to work for the C.O.D. Laundry where she worked for many years. Her family later found its way to Bigfork in the late eighties where Connie would find her calling to earn her Certified Nursing Assistant Certification at the Lakeview Care Center. She would spend the next 16 years caring for others who could no longer care for themselves. She worked at the Immanuel Lutheran Home for awhile before coming back to Shelby to work at the Marias Care Center, where she finished out her career. After the Arthritis took over and she was no longer able to work, Connie used her time to volunteer for many local nonprofits and veteran organizations where she collected coats or clothing for those in need, organized fund raisers and held several volunteer positions.She was a member of the Elks Club where she received honorable recognition for her service to the community. She was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary until she passed away. Connie loved animals her whole life. She always found room for one more critter. It didn’t matter if it was domestic, livestock, or an exotic animal, she would always find room. She was especially fond of horses and was always where they were every chance she got. Connie would become a familiar face around many of Montana’s stock yards and cattle sales. She also frequented many horse racing events with family horses on her summer breaks. The only thing Connie loved more than animals, was spending time with her family and friends.No matter where life took her, her free time was spent camping and fishing between Devils Creek and Tiber Reservoir with anyone who could get time to go. It is also no secret that Connie knew the best places to hunt within 200 miles. Connie is survived by her mother, Leah Voorhies; husband, Larry Marcum; four children, Susan Selig (Voorhies), Melissa Smylie, Brenda Stafford (Smylie), and Robert Smylie; 12 randkids, Miranda, Amanda, Matthew, Jessica, Anthony, Zach, Haley, Dylan, Blake, Anika, Donald and Tiffany; seven great-grandkids, Abby, Chris, Noah, Bella, Jenna, Donnie and Declan; sister, Debbie Voorhies; brothers, Richard Voorhies and Mike Voorhies; and more than twenty nieces, nephews, greats and grands. Connie was preceded in death by her father, Richard Voorhies and sister, Ruth Voorhies Judkins.
